A cultural icon is getting a red dust makeover.
Ahead of the Women’s Weekly Birthday Cake Cookbook celebrating 45 years, the acclaimed publication is shaking things up and creating a cake book of Australian landmarks.
Women’s weekly editor Suzanne Brinkley said she wanted to look outside the box and was heading to the Pilbara for inspiration and to choose a cake to represent the north west.
In honour of the trip the City of Karratha is holding a “Bake Off” to help the baking staff narrow down the odds.
Mayor Daniel Scott said Karratha was a melting pot for ideas.
“We’ve got it all covered from a Red Dog cake, to a jelly Sam’s island cake, BHP are even sponsoring a cake called ‘death by dust’, it’s bound to be the best and perhaps last red velvet cake you ever try.
“Rio Tinto heard about the competition and are entering a chocolate lava cake inspired by Juukan Gorge.”
The mayor just asked that any “special” icing sugar should NOT be added to any cakes.
“I’m looking at you Wickham residents,” he said.
“Let’s not force Women’s Weekly to do a shit Broome Caramel Camel themed cake.”
Bonnie Rogers is entering the bake off and says the upcoming election has inspired her baking efforts.
“We never see a federal politician in the Pilbara unless they’re licking some mining boss’s ass,” she said.
“I’ve decided to do a hide-and-seek cake, you have to find Melissa Price who is rolling round in a wad of cash. It’s a green tea génoise sponge, which could collapse at any moment.”
