A town in the North West of WA is celebrating a historic academic milestone this week.
Port Hedland pupil Jayden Roy Scunt is the first person in the town’s history to graduate year 7, an achievement that was marked by an official ceremony attended by the mayor and State Government dignitaries.
Speaking to a capacity crowd at the Port Hedland Civic Centre, mayor Jacinta Behrend poured adulation on young Scunt.
“Year seven graduation has been a day that has eluded our community for 130 years,” Cr Behrend said.
“Today marks the blazing of a new trail – no longer will Hedlanders be stumped by basic mathematics concepts like BIMDAS,”
Following the ceremony, the Town of Port Hedland issued a media release stating that Scunt would be given the keys to the city.
They also hinted that Scunt would be fast tracked to a position on council and did not rule out a run at Mayor if he finished all his homework this week and helped mum with the washing up.
WA Premier Roger Cook, who flew in to attend the graduation ceremony, told the Bugle that young Scunt’s achievement were a welcome relief.
“Trying to manage the most economically important port in Australia has so far been exceptionally difficult,” the Premier admitted.
“State revenue reports to date are often off by hundreds of millions of dollars and are written on the back of a Dome receipt,”
“Speaking of, I got a flat white this morning at the Dome in Hedland and the cashier spent ten minutes trying to figure out my change, handed me a fifty and just smiled nervously.”
Early discussions about which road to name after Mr Scunt have reportedly hit a standstill after BHP confirmed each suggested road will be shut to the public before 2030 as part of their bid to turn the town into one large workers accommodation
