A senior high school in Karratha has been announced as the official winners of the ‘Sculptures by the Salt’ competition early Friday morning.

Winning artist Jayden (13) spoke exclusively to the Bugle following the announcement that his sculpture, ‘Humungous Bong’ took out top prize.

“it was pretty easy,” he shrugged.

“I just imagined what it would be like smoking a fat choonta as big as a person.”

Organiser and judge Brett Johansen said Jayden’s design captured the Karratha ethos to a tee.

“Jayden’s 100-word submission was truly captivating – despite being riddled with spelling errors,”

“it’s also a privilege to be able to shine a spotlight on culturally and linguistically diverse artists – given he listed his first language as Pig Latin.”

Engineers and fellow artists brought on to assist estimated installation costs to be in the order of $50,000 given the complexity of making the statue not merely visually appealing, but adding actual functionality.

Head engineer Billy Chong said the project sparked excitement.

“Our team just wrapped on a similar public artwork at a school in Cairns called 6-7 Deez Nutz,”

“it will be great to see future generations roasting an Ozstreicher on the flats!”

Jayden’s school declined to comment.
